Photograph, Field Marshall George William Frederick Charles, 2nd Duke of Cambridge (1819-1904) by T. C. Turner and Co. Ltd. (photographers) Barnsbury Park. Signed, George. Prince George, the second Duke of Cambridge (1819-1904) was born in Germany and was the only son of Adolphus Frederick, First Duke of Cambridge (and youngest son of George III). He was a cousin of Queen Victoria and the maternal uncle of Queen Mary, wife of King George V. In 1847 he married Sarah Fairbrother, an actress, while she was pregnant with their fifth child, in opposition to the Royal Marriages Act. The Duke served in the Crimean War and became Commander-in-Chief of the British Army in 1887. He founded the school of military music at Kneller Hall in 1857.
