Full description
Willington is seated and looking to the left. He is wearing a three piece suit, a white shirt and a tie secured by a tie pin. A watch chain, wedding band and a coloured handkerchief in his top pocket are visible. Signed and dated: Willingdon, 1919. He and his wife visited 16 Charles Street and Polesden Lacey from 1909 - 1941. There are several photos in Margaret Greville's albums of visiting him in India and at his home in Dover when he was Constable of Dover castle and Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. The First Marquess of Willingdon (1866-1941) was a Liberal politician, holding seats in Hastings and Bodmin. In 1910 he was created Baron Willingdon of Ratton and in 1911 he became a lord-in-waiting to King George V. He was appointed Governor of Bombay (Mumbai) in 1913 and then in 1919 was made Governor of Madras. He went on to be Governor-General of Canada and Viceroy and Governor-General of India.
