A studio portrait of Violet.
Full description
Violet is looking downwards wearing gauze over her head and shoulders. Her waist is nipped in tightly over a with a pale blouse and skirt. She has a jewel, leaves and flowers central to her neckline. Strangely there is a hand on her left shoulder. Signed and dated: Violet Rutland, 1906. Violet was married to the 8th Duke of Rutland. She was an accomplished artist and sculptress. Violet was a member of the Souls, a sophisticated set of young aristocrats and society debutantes who were drawn together by a shared interest in intellectual conversation and high-spirited wit in the last two decades of the nineteenth century. Included in the group was Arthur Balfour MP, later Conservative Prime Minister. The Souls had a powerful impact on British culture and society.
