Summary
Mezzotint by Norman Hirst titled 'The Setting Sun' after J Hoppner
Full description
Philip stands in his smart suit and lace shirt looking towards us, centre stage. The landscape behind him focuses on the setting sun and a cloudy sky. To his right, his eldest sister supports, Maria, who is leaning against her skirts. Both the girls are looking downwards. Susannah points at the sunset or, perhaps, at Philip, the son and heir. The girls sit in front of trees, in the distance is a village and beyond that mountains. The original painting is now in The Huntington, California. The Mezzotint was published, framed and sold by P. & D. Colnaghi and Thomas Agnew & Sons.
Provenance
The bequest of Margaret (Anderson) McEwan, The Hon. Mrs Ronald - later Dame Margaret - Henry Fulke Greville, DBE (1863-1942) from probate records linked with the donation of the property to the National Trust in 1943. This item found on the record for Polesden Lacey pictures, drawings etc., The South Bedroom mezzotints, page 141.
