Full description
The Countess stands outside in front of a formal landscape. Elizabeth had been the star of Drury Lane for twenty years and was called the Queen of Comedy by Horace Walpole. She was known for her vivacity and style, taking leading roles in plays by Colman and Sheridan. Elizabeth married the Earl of Derby in 1797. Lawrence was 21 when he was commissioned to paint Lady Elizabeth, she was displeased that he had made her appear so slim. The fur-trimmed silk cloak, and fine skirt are beautifully painted.
Provenance
The bequest of Margaret (Anderson) McEwan, The Hon. Mrs Ronald - later Dame Margaret - Henry Fulke Greville, DBE (1863-1942) from probate records linked with the donation of the property to the National Trust in 1943. This item found on the record for Polesden Lacey pictures, drawings etc., Mrs Greville's Bedroom, page 139.
