This highly-finished watercolour was painted by Hine in the final stage of his career, when his favourite subject was the countryside of his native Sussex.
Summary
Watercolour on paper, Bible Bottom, Malling Hills by Henry George Hine (Brighton 1811 - Hampstead 1895), signed and dated 1891. Moorland scene, with shepherd and flock. In carved and gilded frame.
Provenance
Letter from Peter Rose to Paul Dearn, dated 8.10.1998, suggests that this picture belonged to Christopher Norris, a distinguished picture collector who lived in a large first floor apartment in Polesden Lacey, and was a resident there until his death in 1985(?). He was trustee of the Greville (George?) Macdonald charity which apparently operated from Polesden Lacey, and in 1955 he presented several Hines paintings to the Brighton Museum mainly through this trust. This particular painting was then purchased by Christopher Norris from the Brighton Museum in the mid 1970's. After Christopher Norris' death his picture collection, including most of his Hine's, were sold, but evidently this painting must instead have been bequeathed to the National Trust in his will, or presented to the Trust by his family (see full letter in Polesden Lacey archives, box file 377)
