Summary
The large oil painting of William McEwan by Jean-Joseph-Benjamin Constant (1845 – 1902), for which he had five sittings at the Savoy Hotel, was a gift from his daughter, Margaret Greville. Apparently he didn't like it so had another painted, this time by Walter Ouless (1848 - 1933). Both can be seen at Polesden Lacey. The framed photograph is of this painting. William was a Scottish Liberal Party politician, philanthropist and brewer. He married Helen Anderson in 1885, their daughter, Margaret Helen Anderson (1863 - 1942) was a witness to their wedding. William made Margaret his sole heir establishing her in society, making her marriage to Hon. Ronald Greville (1864 - 1908) acceptable and financing her life-long role in society centred at Polesden Lacey and Charles Street, Mayfair.
