Full description
Metal plaque on a wooden stand to commemorate Mrs. Greville’s gift of a Spitfire during the Second World War. Mrs Greville donated the price of one Spitfire to the government in 1940. The plane was a P8643 built by Vickers Armstrong (Castle Bromwich) and entered service in 1941. It was named Margaret Helen after Mrs. Greville. The spitfire was used at Kirkbride as part of 41 Maintenance Group and later at 226 squadron Wittering where it was involved in low flying strafing missions, known as ‘Rhubarb runs’. The Margaret Helen was struck off and scrapped in 1944.
