Summary
A black-japanned and painted cane-seated open armchair, English, circa 1860 in the Regency style, by Morant & Co., of New Bond Street, London Painted with reserves of flowers between foliate sprays, and with a back of crossed slender splats, and open arms flanking a cane seat. On tapering square-section legs with moulded collars to the feet. The rear legs outswept. Although Regency in form, this chair is a later revival of the style, painted with sprays of flowers in the Victorian taste. Morant & Co. were one of the best cabinet-makers of the 19th century, and frequently revived earlier styles.
Provenance
The bequest of Margaret (Anderson) McEwan, The Hon. Mrs Ronald - later Dame Margaret - Henry Fulke Greville, DBE (1863-1942) from probate records linked with the donation of the property to the National Trust in 1943. This item found on the record for Polesden Lacey King's Parlour, page 57.
