Summary
A mahogany Carlton House desk, English, late 19th century, in George III style. A copy of the desk reputedly made circa 1780 for the then Prince of Wales (the future George IV) whose residence was Carlton House. Topped by a curving superstructure fitted to its centre with six pigeonholes flanked to either side by three short drawers and a pair of cupboards, a further three short drawers at each end of the curve. The top sliding and lined with baize to form a book stand, and above three frieze drawers above a moulding. Raised on four tapering square-section legs terminating in brass caps and castors.
Provenance
The bequest of Margaret (Anderson) McEwan, The Hon. Mrs Ronald - later Dame Margaret - Henry Fulke Greville, DBE (1863-1942) from probate records linked with the donation of the property to the National Trust in 1943. This item found on the record for Polesden Lacey Library, page 18.
