Summary
Maiolica plate, painted with the finding of Moses. The reverse is inscribed in blue with the subject matter and the date of production - 'Como fu retrovato moise de la regina Sabba'; School of Urbino; about 1545. However in this case the makers have confused two biblical events. The inscription on the back calls the subject ‘How Moses was found by the Queen of Sheba’. Moses was actually found by the Pharaoh’s daughter.
Provenance
The bequest of Margaret (Anderson) McEwan, The Hon. Mrs Ronald - later Dame Margaret - Henry Fulke Greville, DBE (1863-1942) from probate records linked with the donation of the property to the National Trust in 1943. This item found on the record for Polesden Lacey Majolica stored in the basement, page 96.
