Plate, tin-glazed earthenware, painted, possibly made by the Fontana Workshop, Urbino, Italy, about 1560. The reverse is inscribed in blue with the subject matter - 'Como fu retrovato moise de la regina Sabba' - ‘How Moses was found by the Queen of Sheba’.In this case the makers have confused two biblical events as Moses was actually found by the Pharaoh’s daughter.
Provenance
The bequest of Margaret (Anderson) McEwan, The Hon. Mrs Ronald - later Dame Margaret - Henry Fulke Greville, DBE (1863-1942) from probate records linked with the donation of the property to the National Trust in 1943. This item found on the record for Polesden Lacey Majolica stored in the basement, page 96.
