Maiolica tazza, painted with the rape of Lucretia by Sextus, son of the tyrant Tarquin the Proud. Lucretia's rape and subsequent suicide triggered a revolt that led to the overthrow of the monarchical tyranny and the creation of the Roman Republic. Inscribed on the reverse in blue-black 'Lucretia de ma destra ers la prima' followed by an oblique stroke and further marked 'N' in ruby lustre. Made in Urbino in about 1535, by a painter close to Francesco Xanto Avelli, with gold and ruby lustre pigments added at Gubbio.
