Summary
One of sixteen Restoration Record Books created by Sheila Pettit, former Historic Buildings Representative for the National Trust. One of three scrapbooks documenting the completed restoration work at Cragside prior to opening. A scrapbook with black leather effect covers, with gold trim, and black pages, with layers of black tissue paper protection lining the pages. This book contains research into the landscape of Cragside, probably as an aid to restoration work of the grounds. There are images of the estate from various sources, including; watercolours by M. G. Watson, an artist’s impression of what estate looked like before planting/landscaping was done; a series of watercolours by E. A. Vernon Harcourt of Simonside, the Rothbury hills and Views of Cragside, dated 1864-75 [Harcourt was the Vicar of Rothbury in 1883]; photographs taken by Country Life Magazine 1910, taken from glass negatives; Photographs and a description of the grounds written by Winifreda Jane Ayde, Lady (1860-1914) from an article in The Throne, dated 4th August 1906; prints of paintings of the estate which seem to be early postcards; an article by John Miller in Homes and Gardens, 1979. The book also contains National Monuments Record black and white photographs of the interiors before opening, and images taken by Turner’s after opening. The images are dated 1975-83. It also includes postcards dated 1979, images from Country Life, from an article by Clive Aslet, dated November 1980. There are also several loose articles about Cragside tucked inside the covers.
