Summary
A Victorian fireplace in the Gothik style, integral to panelling around room, dating from 1872-77, designed by Richard Norman Shaw (RA) for the Entrance Hall at Cragside. The curved mantel of wood, the pillars of same material. The surround of grey stone, framing a terracotta tiled back panel. black cast iron grate, with a stone back plate. The hearth of the same terracotta tiles laid in a chevron pattern with a raised stone kerb.
Provenance
Armstrong collection. Transferred by the Treasury to The National Trust in 1977 via the National Land Fund, aided by 3rd Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1919 - 1987).
