Summary
Fireplace designed by Norman Shaw's Chief Assistant, William Lethaby (1857-1931), and carved by Farmer and Brindley. Made from ten tonnes of Italian marble and alabaster. Includes a deep inglenook with ionic columns that support a highly carved chimney breast. Completed in 1884.
Provenance
Armstrong collection. Transferred by the Treasury to The National Trust in 1977 via the National Land Fund, aided by 3rd Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1919 - 1987).
