Summary
A historic system comprising of a Vortex turbine Gilbert Gilkes and Co. 1883 from Low Trewhitt Farm Thropton for threshing and winnowing, 6HP at 230rpm. Original patent in 1850 by James Thomson of Belfast as a Double Vortex Turbine. From 1856 manufactured in Kendal by Williamson Brothers. A William’s type Glikes Turbine of 6 horsepower which was ordered in September 1883 from Gilbert Glikes and Gordon, of Kendal, for one of Lord Armstrong’s farms at Low Trewhitt, near Thropton. Is on display as an ‘open cut away’ style model, the parts of which are painted in different colours to demonstrate how a turbine works.
