Lord Armstrong's microscope. Armstrong loved science and would experiment with many things.
Summary
A gilt-metal stereoscopic microscope with two eyepieces, marked 'Smith, Beck and Beck, London', in cardboard box containing six parts for the microscope. Smith, Beck and Beck were only in business under that name from 1857 - 1865. The microscope is described in Richard Beck's work "A treatise on the construction, proper use, and capabilities of Smith, Beck, and Beck's achromatic microscopes" (1865).
Provenance
Armstrong collection. Transferred by the Treasury to The National Trust in 1977 via the National Land Fund, aided by 3rd Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1919 - 1987).
