Summary
Photograph depicting Li Hongzhang (1823–1901), a Chinese government administrator, military commander and diplomat, who visited Britain 1896. Shown in Chinese informal dress, seated, next to a table with a vase with flowers, a spittoon at his feet. Similar but not identical to NT 1230463. Inscribed, [On the right-hand side of the image] 太子太傅文華殿大學士北洋通商大臣直隸總督一等肅毅伯李 六十五歲小像 [On the left-hand side of the image] 送 阿姆士脫琅 Transliteration (with punctuation added): Taizi Taifu, Wenhuadian Daxueshi, Beiyang Tongshang Dachen, Zhili Zongdu, Yideng Suyi Bo Li. Liushiwu sui xiaoxiang. Song Amushituolang. Translation: ‘Grand Preceptor [tutor] of the Crown Prince, Grand Secretary of the Hall of Literary Brilliance, Minister of International Affairs for the Beiyang Region, Viceroy of Zhili province, Li [Hongzhang], Count of the First Rank Suyi. Portrait at the age of 65 [64]. Given to [William] Armstrong.’ With grateful acknowledgement of the assistance of Xie Yun to translate.

Armstrong collection. Transferred by the Treasury to The National Trust in 1977 via the National Land Fund, aided by 3rd Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1919 - 1987).
