Summary
A fan, one from a group of seven, made of bamboo and paper, Japanese, late 19th or early 20th century. Decorated with two designs, one showing the tanzaku wish cards hung up in bamboo plants during the Tanabata festival, the other the painted shells used in the kai-awase memory game.
Provenance
Armstrong collection. Transferred by the Treasury to The National Trust in 1977 via the National Land Fund, aided by 3rd Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1919 - 1987).
