Summary
Woodblock print, ink and pigments on paper, central section of a triptych entitled Igagoe katakiuchi no zu (Picture of the vengeance at Iga Pass), depicting a scene from the kabuki play Soga Dōchū Sugoroku, this section showing the actor Nakamura Utaemon IV (1798-1852) in the role of Karaki Masaemon engaged in combat outside a castle, after Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861), c. 1850, signed lower right Ichiyūsai Kuniyoshi ga (picture by Ichiyūsai Kuniyoshi).
Provenance
Armstrong collection. Transferred by the Treasury to The National Trust in 1977 via the National Land Fund, aided by 3rd Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1919 - 1987).
