Summary
Woodblock print, ink and pigments on paper, the coming-of-age ceremony of the Soga brothers, from the series Soga Monogatari Zue (Illustrated Tales of the Soga Brothers), after Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), c. 1845, signed lower right Hiroshige ga (picture by Hiroshige). The Soga Monogatari is an epic tale of vengeance set in late-12th-century Japan. This scene depicts the two young Soga brothers, Jūrō Sukenari and Gorō Tokimune (lower left), kneeling in front of the Regent, Hōjō Tokimasa (upper right), during their coming-of-age ceremony.
Provenance
Armstrong collection. Transferred by the Treasury to The National Trust in 1977 via the National Land Fund, aided by 3rd Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1919 - 1987).
