Summary
Central window, one of three stained glass windows, with a central subject. Small central medallion containing putto seated on broken tomb. He carries a spear and a sponge, symbols of the Passion, on a small plate. The figure is carried out in white glass on a ruby background. This figure dates from the mid-nineteenth century and has been made to balance the sixteenth century putto of similar form in the right hand light. The windows consist of an overall background of diamond quarries, with 15th.century painted motifs in two patterns, while the borders consist of painted crowns, alternating with coloured blocks of ruby in the left hand and right hand lights, and blue in the centre. Within this general arrangement are small decorative motifs in the upper and lower halves of each of the side lights in each window, and medallions containing subjects in the centre of the lights, two of which are historic European glass, believed bought as a single lot by the owner at the time. All three windows are set into very substantial wooden frames, mounted on the inside of conventional sash windows. It is a compilation of glass from various dates – mainly contemporary, but the central panels on the right and left are made up of pieces from the mediaeval and late mediaeval period. The earlier panels depict Adam and Eve leaving the Garden of Eden (on the right), and the Entombment (on the left) which represent man’s fall from Grace and salvation through Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross.
