Summary
A burr walnut and walnut wellington chest/filling cabinet, British, early 20th century, the rectangular top formed of panel of burr walnut veneer with walnut crossbanding and moulded rim, the frieze with burr walnut rectangular strip with walnut crossbanding above nine black-painted steel drawers, each drawer with a small steel label holder with a cardboard label, the labels read, 'Red +'; 'Nurses/Hospitals'; 'Personal'; 'Women's Legion'; 'Letters/Dogs'; 'Gardens'; 'Farm'; 'Machinery/Tractors'; Articles etc.', two long thin rectangles of burr walnut with walnut crossbanding running down each front edge, the left being fixed while the right is hinged and can be locked to secure the drawers shut, the drawers above a pull-out slide with brass knob handle and a cupboard, the door with burr walnut panel and walnut crossbanding, the cupboard door with brass shaped handle in the form of the Londonderry cypher entwined with an E and a C, a decoratively shaped backplate surmounted by a coronet, the chest mounted on four turned bun feet. The handle combining the letters E and C with the Londonderry cypher is for Edith, Lady Londonderry.
