Summary
A walnut high-backed side chair, one of a set of eight, British or Irish, late 19th century, copy of an early 18th century Venetian side chair, the padded high back with humped top rail, upholstered in dark red velvet with a panel of brocade appliqué applied down the centre (worn), the padded seat with shaped front rail and upholstered in dark red velvet, the seat and backrest both applied with brass-nailed red braid, on block-section and turned front legs terminating in bun feet and square-section rear legs, the front legs joined by a pair of high turned stretchers, a turned stretcher to each side and single plain square-section stretcher between the rear legs. These chairs are copies of a pair of early 18th century Venetian chairs (NT 1220552) at Mount Stewart.
