Full description
This white figurine of ‘Der Fahnenträger’ (the Standard Bearer) stands on the mantelpiece in the sitting room at Mount Stewart, once the home of the Irish/British statesman, Lord Castlereagh (1769-1822). It was a gift from Hermann Goring (1893-1946) to the 7th Marquess of Londonderry (1878-1949) during a visit to Goering's hunting estate in 1936. Produced in the Allach porcelain factory in Bavaria, this special presentation piece was given only to those upon whom the Nazi hierarchy wished to bestow honour. By 1940, Allach production was moved to the concentration camp of Dachau and porcelain figures were produced by enslaved labour.
Provenance
By tradition given to the Marquis of Londonderry during a visit to Hermann Goering, President of the Reichstag, on the occasion of a visit to Germany in 1936. Gifted to the National Trust from Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009), 1976.
