Summary
One of three original Garter banners, belonging to the 3rd Marquess.19th century, painted on silk, with a fringed border, framed and glazed. One of three original banners belonged to the 2nd, 3rd and 6th Marquesses. The 7th Marquess was also a KG, but his original banner is missing. The banners were given to the families of garter Knights on their death, and these originally hung in the Chapel at Wynyard before coming to Mount Stewart in 1989. Lady Mairi Bury purchased the 3 original Garter banners in April 1989, at Christie's Sale of Wynyard items, which were then conserved by Cathy McClintock, framed and hung on the wall. Billy Lawson, one of Lady Mairi Bury's staff, made the frames and fixed (bolted) them to the wall. The 3rd Marquess was made a night of the Garter on the death of the Duke of Wellington, his banner incorporated the armoured glove of the Vane family and the lions rampant of the Stewart family.
