Summary
One of three original 19th century Garter banners with a fringed border, framed and glazed. 6th Marquess. This garter banner incorporates the ravens of the Tempest family. One of three original banners belonged to the 2nd, 3rd and 6th Marquesses. The 7th Marquess was also a KG, but his original banner is missing.The banners were given to the families of garter Knights on their death, and these originally hung in the Chapel at Wynyard before coming to Mount Stewart in 1989. Lady Mairi Bury purchased the 3 original Garter banners in April 1989, at Christie's Sale of Wynyard items, which were then conserved by Cathy McClintock, framed and hung on the wall. Billy Lawson, one of Lady Mairi Bury's staff, made the frames and fixed (bolted) them to the wall.

Purchased at Christie's Sale of Wynyard items by Lady Mairi Bury, April 1989 thence loaned to the National Trust from Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009), 1980, then accepted by HM Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the National Trust, 2013
