Summary
Sculpture, plaster, a pair of busts. NT 1220125.1 is a posthumous portrait of Robert Stewart (1739–1821), 1st Marquess of Londonderry, made by the Florentine-born artist Gaetano Fabbrini (c. 1769-1849), who spent the major part of his career in Belfast. It is an unsigned second version of this model at Mount Stewart, the first (NT 1656089.3) being signed by Gaetano Fabbrini and dated 1823, thus two years after Lord Londonderry’s death. NT 1220125.2, formerly called a portrait of Mary Cowan, Mrs Alexander Stewart (1713–1788), is in fact a copy after a once famous Roman sculpture known as the Zingarella (gypsy girl) but also called a Vestal Virgin, in the Museo Nazionale, Naples.
Provenance
On loan to the National Trust from Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009) from 1976; accepted by HM Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the National Trust in 2013.
