Summary
An oak prie-dieu, one of a set of eight, British, second half 19th century, the rectangular top above a recess (for holding prayer books), the top shelf section between two shaped supports and curved uprights, the uprights joined by two plain stretchers, one below the shelf section and one near the base, the two curved uprights mounted on long floor stretchers with shaped ends, a turquoise fabric upholstered kneeler cushion affixed across the top of the floor stretchers.
Provenance
The 1895 'Inventory and Valuation' of Mount Stewart, Co. Down lists '8 Oak Confessionals' in the Chapel. On loan to the National Trust from Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009) 1980, then accepted by HM Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the National Trust, 2013.
