Full description
This drawing shows the Drawing Room at Mount Stewart at Christmas 1856, the room filled with groups of family and guests, occupied in various activities, reading and conversing. By the nearer of the two fireplaces on the right hand side stands a man in black riding boots, assumed to be Frederick, the 4th Marquess of Londonderry (1805-1872). Beyond him, between the two fireplaces, hangs the portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence of his mother, Catherine Bligh (1774-1812) who died when he was seven years old. The two gasoliers that hang from the cross beams are still in the house, though in different locations, and converted to electricity.(FB 2024).
