Summary
Plaster sculpture relief in wooden frame, Mary and Agnes by Sir George James Frampton (London 1860 - London 1928). The children depicted are the daughters of L. Karslake, and the piece was probably commissioned by a friend of the Framptons (George and his wife Christabel are known to have attended Mary Karslake's wedding). The aedicular frame with painted decoration and applied metal ornamentation was possibly purchased by the artist through the Medici Society. The relief was exhibited at the RA in 1890.
Provenance
The framed relief of Agnes and Mary was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1890, No. 2068, and was sold at Sotheby's on 14 March 973, lot 180. The relief was brought to Standen by Arthur Grogan and was purchased from him by the National Trust in 1987 with assistance from the V&A Purchase Fund.
