Summary
Triptych of woodblock prints on paper, The Whirlpools of Awa, by Utagawa Hiroshige (Edo 1797 - Edo 1868), depicting the whirlpools of the Awa Province, showing the tide rushing through the Naruto straits between Awaji Island and the island of Shikoku.
Provenance
Possibly purchased by the Beale family in Japan during their world tour, 1907. An invoice from Mizoroki & Co. lists an 'old coloured print by Hiroshige' which possibly relates to this print (or 1214765.2). The print cost the Beales 8,000 yen.

The picture is signed and is believed to be by Hiroshige.
