Summary
Steel fender designed by Philip Webb, of elaborate design; the fender has a top and bottom rail of steel between which is a steel trellis with a centre panel of pierced steel and two similar curved corner panels. (The design of the piercing is in keeping with the embossed pattern of the mild steel cheeks of the fireplace.) At right angles to the top rail are three horizontal, parallel, square steel rails, which together form a deep shelf, presumably for the purpose of warming plates etc. From each of the fender's D-shaped ends three flat steel verticals rise to support an open steel loop. The purpose of these loops is presumably to house the fire irons. The fender has a metal base from which steel braces extend to the 'shelf' above. The fender rests on six steel ball feet.
