Summary
8 Day English Dial Clock with Electric Coil Corrector Device by Coventry Astral (H. Williamson Ltd). Circa 1920. Single train, 4 pillar (straight, screwed to plates) fusee movement (with chain) with anchor escapement, steel pendulum rod and stamped on backplate “Coventry (in a key) Astral” and “61509”. Twin, green, silk covered electro-magnetic coils on right hand side of movement operating a lever with a ‘zeroing’ nose which acts in a vee in a cam on the cannon pinion to zero the minute hand on the hour. Wires ran from terminals on the coils, through a hole in the upper right hand side of case to telegraph supply. 14” white painted dial with Roman numerals and blued steel spade and poker hands. Plain mahogany case with inspection doors on right hand side and underneath. Case brass bezel with flat glass over dial. Altogether a high quality clock and with a most interesting feature of a telegraph correction device. An hourly signal could be received from Greenwich Observatory by payment of a charge for line rental and use, and the clock would be corrected at every hour or once per day.
