Summary
Late 17th century long-case clock, with Victorian movement. Case veneered with floral marquetry panels on an ebonised ground. The flat topped hood has barley sugar twist pillars flanking a square brass dial with date aperture, silvered chapter rings and a subsidiary dial indicating seconds. The 11" square brass dial has cherub and scroll spandrels, and a silvered brass chapter ring with Roman numberals, arabic five minutes, 1/4 hour circle and 1/2 hour markers. The floral marquetry case has an oak carcass, flat topped hood with glazed openings to the sides, twisted columns and an unusual horizontal bolt to lock the hood from inside. The dial is signed by Cornelius Herbert of London Bridge, a highly regarded clockmaker (apprenticed in 1690, qualified 1700, subsequently Master of the Clockmaker's Company, died 1751). However the clock case is late 17th century (1690s). The movement is a high class Victorian replacement, by Lund and Blockley, a firm listed as in business 1875-1881.
