Summary
The bookshelf from a figured mahogany bedside table with book shelves, English, part of a bedroom suite designed by Ernest Gimson, circa 1910. The rectangular top surmounted by an arched three-tier bookshelf with slatted back and chamfered to the leading edges, the table with two frieze drawers framed by chequered beading and with silvered metal drop handles, above a wavy frieze and standing on square legs joined by multiple stretchers. Ernest Gimson (1864-1919) was one of the most influential designers of the English Arts and Crafts movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and in particular the genius behind the Cotswold school in furniture and design.
Provenance
Originally on loan from Mrs H.W.H Vickers since 1984 and then purchased by the National Trust in 1998 with the aid of a V&A grant.
