Summary
An oak library cabinet, designed by C. R. Ashbee, circa 1900. The rectangular top above a pair of leaded green glass doors, each with eighteen glass panes and flanked by wide stiles, each having a single sycamore diamond-shaped motif set within a green-stained oak panel and inlaid with a rosewood flower, inside there are five shelves and six document drawers with copper handles, each end has an additional three open shelves. Compare the diamond motif with that on the 'Manxman' piano at Standen (NT 1213978), also designed by C. R. Ashbee.
Full description
Charles Robert Ashbee (1863-1942) was a founder member of the Guild of Handicraft, formed in 1888. Initially based in the East end of London on the Mile End Road, it moved to Chipping Campden in 1902. Ashbee designed most of the furniture that it produced. After commissions in Germany and Hungary, there was widespread admiration in Europe for its products. However, it closed in 1907.
