Summary

One of a pair of solid mahogany open armchairs, English, supplied by S & H Jewell in 1894. Each with slightly arched toprail and solid vase splat flanked by turned posts, the flattened arms with shepherd's crook terminal and incurved support, above drop-in embroidered seats with plain rails and standing on cabriole legs with trefid feet and joined by stretchers. It is understood that Miss Maggie Beale was responsible for the design of the seats and that the Royal School of Needlework embroidered the 'fantastic' animals at the centre of each seat which include dragons and ho-ho birds, whilst the surrounding floral design was executed by Mrs Beale and some of her daughters. Ensuite with the set of fourteen chairs NT 1213987.

Full description

S & H Jewell were a firm of cabinet makers established in 1830, but particularly active in the second half of the 19th century. They were a family business who worked from their premises at 29-31 Little Queen Street, Holborn, London. They also retailed furniture that they had purchased and restored.

Provenance

Supplied to James Beale in May 1894 by S & H Jewell of Little Queen Street, High Holborn, London together with the '14 Spanish mahogany Jacobean upholstered seat chairs with high backs' (NT 1213987) and the 'Spanish mahogany Chippendale dining table' (NT 1213988), all for £88-15.
