Summary
A walnut folding X-shaped chair, Italian, circa 1880. Also known as a 'Savonarola' chair and of Renaissance style, the detachable back-rest carved with incised geometric lines and a central roundel depicting a hand holding a dagger adjacent to a phoenix rising from the water, the sides formed of interlocking slats chip-carved to the leading edges and carved with paw feet, the square armrests have ball terminals and the seat has a gold embossed velvet squab cushion.
