Summary
The mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell jewel chest, purchased in Algiers, 1905 on a mahogany stand made for it by Morris & Co. The chest decorated overall with geometric patterns of zig-zags, whirls and rosettes, the top with floral medallions in rounded panels and with quadrant corners, the front with three small and one long silk-lined drawers above a frieze and bracket feet, with side carrying handles, the mahogany stand with moulded top, ogee-arched friezes and turned legs joined by an undertier, standing on bun feet.
Provenance
Purchased by Margaret Beale from Maison du club, Mustapha Superieur, Algiers, 4th March, 1905. Described on the invoice as an 'Old fine inlaid chest for jewels .... 600.00 francs'. Invoice held at WSRO MS 374.
