Summary
Vase (one of a pair), pale bodied stoneware, rounded form with distinct shoulder, short slightly closed neck and beaded rim, foot ring, designed and decorated by Bessie Newbery for Doulton & Co (Ltd), Lambeth, ca 1919; decorated in coloured glazes with stylised heart shaped seed pods or flowers on stems in dark blue encircling the body, interspersed with green circles on stems placed around the shoulder, around the lower body are a series of scallops from which the stems issue, ground colour of marbled purple and blue glazes.
Full description
Bessie Newbery was listed as a junior assistant in the Faience department at Doulton & Co's Lambeth Art Studio in 1882. She was soon promoted to senior assistant, working with the Doulton Ware artists. She also produced some original designs, including this vase, between ca 1914-24.
