Caption
This bowl was given to Mr and Mrs Beale for their 25th wedding anniversary in 1895 by their family. It is the only piece of De Morgan the Beales owned, but was the inspiration for Arthur and Helen Grogan, the first custodians of Standen, to buy more of De Morgan’s Arts & Crafts ceramics which you can see around the house.
Summary
A pottery bowl with floral decoration, designed by William de Morgan (1839-1917), and painted by J. Hersey. Flowers with green foliage on a dark blue ground, painted in 'Persian or Iznik colours', i.e. yellow, pink, light blue and mauve. Was owned by Mr and Mrs James Beale (original owners of Standen), having been given to them by their children for their 25th wedding anniversary in April 1895.
