Summary
One of a set of sixteen ash ladder-back chairs, designed by Ernest Gimson for Sapperton Village Hall, circa 1912. Each with three slightly arched horizontal splats between turned uprights, the rush seat standing on turned legs joined by multiple stretchers.
Provenance
Purchased from Sapperton Village Hall 2014. The Sapperton Village Hall near Cirencester in Gloucestershire is a unique building, designed and built in 1912 by Ernest Barnsley and Norman Jewson who were both key to the Arts and Crafts movement. The Hall has been given a Grade II listed status and still contains furniture specifically designed for the Hall by Ernest Gimson and the Barnsley brothers.
