Summary
An oak travelling chest, English, 1870s. Of oak, with a brass carry handle at either end, and a pair of brass locks. -- Bearing a label reading 'Harrods Funiture Depository, Barnes SW13. Mrs Max Mallowan 25-10-34', so once the property of Agatha Christie (1890-1976) who married Max Mallowan in September 1930. The locks, by Chubb, are engraved with a serial number corresponding to the 1870s, and are marked '57 St. Paul's Churchyard', premises the firm vacated in 1877.
Provenance
The property of Agatha Christie, or Mrs Max Mallowan, in 1934. Date of introduction to Greenway not recorded, but given to the National Trust by Mrs Rosalind Hicks (d. 2004), Anthony Hicks (d. 2005) and Mathew Prichard in 2006, and accepted in 2007.
