Summary
Royal Humane Society's Bronze Medal for Rescues from Drowning. Dated 26/2/1875 with bar 13/4/1885. Awarded to Vice-Admiral James Lacon Jammet CVO, RN. Circular. Front - putti carrying torch with inscriptions around edge 'Lateat scintillula forsan' and below 'Soc. Lond. in besuscitat intermortuoerum isstit MDCCLXXIV'. Reverse - wreath with inscription in centre 'vit. ob. serv. d.d. soc. reg. h.v.m.' and around edge 'Hoc pretium cive servato tuLit'. Rim - inscription 'Lieut J.L. Hammet, RN 26 Feby 1875'. Bar - inscription '13 April R.H.S. 1885'. Ribbon blue.
Provenance
This medal was awarded to Vice-Admiral James Lacon Hammet (1848-1905). James Lacon Hammet married Alice Bedingfeld, daughter of 7th Baronet, in 1891. Their daughter was Mrs Violet Hartcup. Violet was cousin of 9th Baronet, and niece of Sybil, Lady Bedingfeld. Violet contributed to the purchase of Oxburgh in 1952, and gave this medal to the National Trust in 1985.
