Summary
A chair, part of a suite of walnut and upholstered seating furniture, English, circa 1863 from a design by John Dibblee Crace Three pieces including a pair of chairs and a bench, all without arms and upholstered in a buttoned red velvet with fringe tassels. Raised in square section chamfered octagonal legs with flower head carved rosettes and brass castors. Designed by Victorian architect J.D. Crace as part of his 1863 redecoration of the Drawing Room.
Provenance
The sofa and one of the chairs (covered by later floral case covers) apprea in late C19 photographs of the Drawing Room. Bought by Mr Lewin of Hilborough in 1951 Oxburgh sale, along with a gilt console table OXB/F/88? which was returned to Oxburgh in the 1970's. Sold by Mrs Lewin to Mrs Wiles's mother, Kate Cowan, a local teacher and volunteer at Oxburgh.
