Summary
Black papier mache sewing 'basket' of wavy outline with a central gilt metal grapes and vine-leaves carrying handle, flanked by hinged and wavy-edged lids to the sewing containers. The lids and central panel are decorated with mother-of-pearl and painted flowers, including roses, convolvulus, fuchsia, anniculas etc. entwined with blue ribbons. The outside of the main body of the container is decoarted with gilt patterns of scrolls, oak leaves and acorns. The inside is lined with white paper, sprigged with green hearts; the lids are covered with bright pink watered silk and fitted for sewing accessories. Probably West Midlands mid 19th Century.
