Lithograph on paper, Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) (from Twelve Portraits, First Series) by Sir William Nicholson (Newark-on-Trent 1872 – Berkshire 1949), marked at top W. NICHOLSON, 1897/99. A three-quarter length portrait, right profile of the author and poet who was the son of John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911) and Alice Macdonald. He married Caroline Starr Balestier (1862-1939) and they had three children: Josephine Kipling (1892-1899) , Elsie Kipling, Mrs George Bambridge (1896 – 1976) and John Kipling (1897- killed in action 1915).
