Summary
A walnut, rosewood and maple marquetry pedestal chess, or games, table, English, circa 1870. The circular top inlaid with an eight-by-eight chessboard, of alternating maple and rosewood squares, within a border of foliate arabesque marquetry. The frieze beaded, and raised on a lappet-carved, knopped and baluster-turned column on three downswept scroll-carved legs, terminating in scroll feet.
Provenance
Date of introduction to Greenway not recorded, but given to the National Trust by Mrs Rosalind Hicks (d. 2004), Anthony Hicks (d. 2005) and Mathew Prichard in 2006, and accepted in 2007.
