Summary
A rectangular inkstand of rosewood with sloping borders of mosaic, the wide upper border of flowers, and a narrower lower border of cruciform patterns. The central section consists of two velvet lined recesses for inkwells, flanking a central rectangular fixed box with a cube pattern lid surrounded by mosaic zig-zag borders and a pencil trough in front. The shallow drawer below, with a round black glass knob, is lined with red paper decorated with a vermicular leafy pattern in gold. The underside is covered with black paper, textured with a 'shot silk' pattern; the box stand on flattened globular feet. The two glass inkwells are not original (they are smaller than their recesses); one has a micromosaic top with cork. Mid 19th century.
